New Jersey Senior Care Centers Lift Residents’ Spirits Through Technology
On Monday, March 16, 2020 New Jersey Governor Murphy announced restrictions to help to “flatten the curve” of the spread of coronavirus. Schools are closed indefinitely. Restaurants and bars are closed except for take-out. Gyms are closed, weddings cancelled… Social distancing is mandated.

Hillsborough Township, NJ Speaking on Monday’s panel was the New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli. She reiterated the need for social distancing and other precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. But she also acknowledged the profound impact that social distancing has on the mental health of people in a time of crises where we need to connect with each another more than in more normal times.

And, a population most susceptible to feelings of loneliness and despair are our senior citizens. The coronavirus has hit everyone hard, but one population it has affected perhaps worse than others are senior citizens living in assisted living facilities. In addition to the concerns for their physical health, there are also significant concerns about the isolating effects of the pandemic on their mental well-being. Hospitals and nursing homes aren’t allowed visitors. So, how do nursing homes and assisted living facilities help alleviate the potential sadness and depression the residents may feel with social distancing rules, especially if the residents aren’t tech savvy or physically capable of operating a technological device to stay connected?

The Bridgeway Care Center and Avalon Assisted Living facilities in Bridgewater and Hillsborough, NJ have responded quickly to all the recent changes. In an effort to provide extra support for their residents in these trying times, they’ve created and implemented an online program called “Stay in Touch.” This program is offered free of charge to all residents and their families. Chris Santiago, IT Support Specialist for Bridgeway and Avalon, describes the program:

Stay in Touch lets family members stay connected with their loved ones during these appalling times… We’ve set up a few Skype accounts for our facilities. Family members can schedule Skype calls… We have designated laptops for each of our Skype accounts, depending on which account the call has been scheduled, and we bring the device to their room. We’ve attached an HD web cam and a USB speakerphone to the laptop so the video and audio quality is of the utmost, if not better for some of our residents’ audio and visual handicap.

We also have Family Messenger. This option lets the family members compose a message then attach pictures/videos. We bring either a laptop or a tablet where we can read the message and show the picture/video to the resident.

According to the website, these services are already in high demand. Due to the backlog Bridgeway and Avalon staff are asking family members to schedule Skype visits with at least 24-hours’ notice, so that the staff is able to serve all of the residents and their families. User friendly directions are provided on the website for both the Skype meetings and the Family Messenger service.
