Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) uses a comprehensive developmental and behavioural intervention framework for assessing and intervening in the treatment of young children with ASD.

By assessing a child’s developmental skills, TherapySpot provides treatments incorporating the teaching principles from Pivotal Response Training.

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is based on behavioral therapy aimed at children that suffer from autism aged between 12 and 48 months. Based on the methods of applied behavior analysis (ABA), it involves parents and therapists using play to build fun, positive relationships.

Through this play and other joint activities, children are encouraged to boost their language, cognitive and social skills. The whole process is founded on an understanding of how toddlers learn and develop.

It is focused on the idea of constructing positive relationships. The teaching happens while children are involved in their natural play and other everyday activities. The aim is to use play as a way of encouraging meaningful interaction and communication with the children.TherapySpot encourages the use of ESDM therapy in a variety of settings. These can include at home, in a clinic, or at school. The therapy is offered in both one-to-one and group settings.

What TherapySpot has found is that the therapy is effective for children with a range of learning abilities and styles. What they have developed is a technique for helping children make significant progress not only in their social skills, but also in their language skills, and their cognitive skills.

This means that children who have learning challenges are able to benefit as much as those children who are not afflicted in this way.

A key part of the ESDM program is parent involvement. Therapists need to explain and define the models of the strategies they employ so that all members of families can practice at home.

About Therapy Spot

Since the late 1990s, Simone Friedman’s vision was to launch a clinic in Toronto so evidence-based treatment could be provided to children and adults with communication, cognitive and learning difficulties.

In 2012, Simone found the space she was seeking. It was in 1232 Dufferin, an early 20th century bank building that she renovated. Simone’s team grew and focused service provision in three other core areas: children and adults who had swallowing and other oral disorders,  children with learning difficulties, as well as adults with stroke

In 2014, Simone came together with Ophelia Reid, a Speech-Language Pathologist with experience in autism services. Today Therapy Spot’s programs are achieving stellar outcomes.
