A halogen lamp, also known as a tungsten halogen, quartz-halogen, or quartz iodine lamp, is an incandescent lamp consisting of a tungsten filament sealed into a compact transparent envelope that is filled with a mixture of inert gas and a small amount of a halogen.

The filament halogen lamp is allowed to operate at a higher temperature than a standard incandescent lamp of similar power and operating life; this also produces light with higher luminous efficacy and color temperature.

Although halogen lamp have a relatively long life span than some other types, there are some considerations you need to know that when it comes time to replace. Before you replace the lamp, you’d better adopt precautionary measures to ensure the continued use of your floor lamp.

Firstly, unplug the lamp and allow plenty of time to make sure the lamp and bulb completely cool off. For the reason that halogen bulbs give off much brighter light than older-style incandescent bulbs, they keep very hot and retain heat even after turned off. To avoid burns from this, ensure the bulbs have cooled down before you replace it.

Secondly, prepare a pair of gloves. If you have no gloves, a handkerchief, an old T-shirt, or even a paper towel will work. Oil from your hands may burn on the bulb’s surface, even potentially be a fire hazard. So you are not supposed to touch the bulbs with your bare hands. And then, you are allowed to unscrew the small screws that hold it in place and remove the glass protector.

Thirdly, push down gently on the halogen bulb itself, and carefully lift the bulb out of the lamp. Some smaller bulbs are secured with pins at their bases; in this case, carefully push them in until the bulb can be pulled out.

At last, remove the new bulb from its packaging and wear your protective cloth gloves while replacing the halogen floor lamp bulb. Screw in the new bulb until it is firmly in place. Replace the protective glass cover and tighten the screws. After doing these, test your new bulb to be sure it works.

Standard and halogen incandescent bulbs are much less efficient than LED and compact fluorescent lamps and have been subjected to phase out in many jurisdictions because of this.
