New children’s book, "Gob the Gnome™: The Gnome and the Science Experiment" is released, the endearing story of kids learning valuable lessons from mythical beings about protecting the environment

“Gob the Gnome™: The Gnome and the Science Experiment” by Marilyn Slaughter, Ed.D., illustrated by Angel Neha, has been released worldwide. This 72-page children’s book is the third installment of the Gob the Gnome™ series, following Nathan and his classmates back into Sunbrook Forest on a 5th grade field trip for nature-focused science experiments. When Nathan is paired with Tucker, a student known for being a bully, he worries about how the day will go.

Nathan, who has already met Gob the Gnome™ on previous trips to the forested park, also hopes that his magical friend will stay out of sight. He doesn’t want Gob to draw too much attention to the park, where people might flock there in hopes of spotting him (and hurt the environment in the process).

Uneasy about being partnered with Tucker, Nathan gets a glimmer of hope when he meets the friendly Ranger Lisa, who sticks up for him in the face of Tucker’s meanness. As Nathan prepares their experiment to measure the lake’s pH level, Tucker throws his chocolate milk carton out into the water.

Angered by his carelessness, Nathan and Ranger Lisa both question Tucker, but don’t have much luck getting through. Gob the Gnome™ soon appears, infuriated by Tucker’s littering. Tucker continues to resist, so Gob calls on another magical friend, Mera the mermaid!

Taking the time to explain to Tucker how even just one littered milk carton can hurt the environment, the group slowly helps him understand how much damage litter can do, and how it affects the entire ecosystem. With lessons learned and a new friendship forming, Nathan and Tucker make a plan to use their experiment to teach the rest of the class about helping the environment.

The story contains a multitude of lessons for young readers, from information about microplastics and water pollution to handling conflict with patience. Mera, Gob, and Ranger Lisa help young Tucker understand the error of his ways, and inspire him to be not just more environmentally conscious, but a friendlier, kinder person as well.

Like the other installments in the Gob the Gnome™ series, the book contains a glossary of terms to help young people build vocabulary and learn about environmental concerns. Through these fun, whimsical characters, Marilyn Slaughter, Ed.D., helps kids develop a deeper understanding of protecting the natural world, the repercussions of small actions, and how education can help change opinions.

Colorfully illustrated and packed with valuable teachings, the entire Gob the Gnome™ series is inspired by the author’s love of the outdoors and passion for making education fun. She aims to inspire kids and parents to spend more time in nature, take better care of the environment, and understand how the ecosystem affects everyone.

Gob the Gnome™: The Gnome and the Science Experiment (ISBN: 9781961532557) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon. The hardcover retails for $33.99 and the ebook retails for $9.99. Review copies and interviews are available upon request.

From the back cover:

This short story is about Nathan’s adventures during a 5th grade science field trip to the Sunbrook Forest National Park. Nathan is familiar with the park because he and his sister Iris have visited the park before with the encouragement of their mom. Nathan overcomes some anxieties of not liking the subject of science, having to buddy with the 5th grade bully, and worrying that other 5th graders, teachers, and volunteers might see Gob, the gnome, and cause problems for Gob and the park. By the end of the science field trip, Nathan has built a level of confidence that he could make the best science presentation in his classroom, and together with the 5th grade bully, develop a monthly “Clean the Park” project where he and his classmates gather to clean up the forest. Nathan meets an interesting park ranger who later becomes instrumental in his interest in science, the environment, and future career plans after high school.

Since the 1400s, folklore has described gnomes as guardians of treasure and the protectors of Earth. Gnomes represent stability, growth, and good luck. This is the third book of the six-book series about Gob the Gnome™. The six books all revolve around a gnome, the protector of a local forest, who becomes friends with Nathan and Iris and helps educate them on the importance of caring for the environment.
